 by 3rd Class

Our School Fair was on Friday, December 6th. Everyone from the school was involved in setting it up. All classes made Christmas crafts and decorations for it. The boy’s school were involved too. Our families and everyone from the community were invited to come. The fair was on in our school hall. It started at 10.30am. There was face painting, a jumble sale, lots and lots of stalls selling Christmas crafts, food, tea and coffee, popcorn, pancakes and a special Christmas raffle. The Fair is an annual fundraiser for the school. Thank you to everyone for supporting us. We had the most enjoyable day. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.

Climate Action Week 2019

We held a Climate Action Week in our school from 14th-20th of October. During this week all classes took part in lots of fun and interesting activities. Junior infants - Third class took part in a tree identification lesson. They can now identify lots of different types of trees on our school grounds. All classes were involved in planting our raised beds with spring bulbs. Our biggest action of the week was getting rid of all our single use plastic bottles from the school lunches. We have replaced them with reusable drink bottles that the pupils use every day. All classes were encouraged to write a climate action pledge and put it into our climate action pledge box. Here are some of the pledges that were written:

I pledge to buy less plastic..
I pledge to save water and electricity..
I pledge to pick up rubbish..
I pledge to use less plastic..
I pledge to recycle more..

INTO Schools 7 Finals in Loughgeorge      October 21st 2019

Holy Trinity national school qualified for the INTO 7s finals in Loughgeorge for the first time ever this Monday. In their first game the Girls from Holy Trinity played against Bullaun N.S. It was a fiercely contested affair with the teams finished level at the final whistle on a scoreline of 0-6 Holy Trinity and 2-0 to Bullaun. In the final group game Holy Trinity played against Cregmore N.S, Holy Trinity won this match on a score of 4-3 to 3-2 but unfortunately lost out on a place in the semi-finals on scoring difference. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day out and they can be immensely proud of their efforts.

Our Visit to Baboró Show - Carnival of the Animals

A recount of our trip by 3rd Class

On Monday the 14th of October we went to the Town Hall Theatre to see a show called Carnival of the Animals. All classes from 2nd - 6th went on the trip. Mr. Woods and the class teachers came too. The bus picked us up outside the school at 10.30am and we were dropped off near the theatre in the city. We sat in the front row seats. It was very exciting. The stage was huge. It was decorated with colourful bunting, lots of instruments and chairs for the musicians. We saw a cello, violins, a piano, a double bass, a viola and a xylophone. An actor opened the show. She told us about all of the animals in Carnival of the animals. We had learned about this piece of music in class and about the composer Camille Saint-Sains. The actor was very funny, especially when she ran around pretending to be a donkey! She also read out some of our poems and jokes that we had sent her. The show was very entertaining. We really enjoyed listening to all the different instruments being played. It was lively, funny and even relaxing at times. After the show the bus collected us at the cathedral. We arrived back to school at 1.30pm. It was a fantastic day!

We made animal masks for our visit to Carnival of the Animals.

22/10/2018                                     Snowdrop Planting Ceremony

Thanks to those who came today to remember deceased past pupils and teachers of both schools. We had a short but moving ceremony. The names of pupils were read aloud and the snowdrops were planted. There were a few words about the symbolism of the snowdrops.
"The loss of a child, or the loss of a brother or sister is very hard on those left behind. The pain never goes away.

To deal with the loss a person needs to be very resilient – to have the ability to keep going in tough times.
The snowdrop is symbolic of this resilience. In the middle of winter when there appears to be no growth the snowdrop sticks its head above ground. It is a small flower but it brings the promise of spring and the promise of hope. It is resilient and strong. That is the reason we are planting snowdrops today.
When these snowdrops appear next January or February we will invite you back to honour your resilience and to remember your loved ones."

Remembrance Mass to be held on Friday November 16th at 10am.

Science Week 2017
On 13th November we learned all about energy and how to make energy. We used a rubber band, a pom-pom, a stick and a peg to make energy. We put the rubber band in through the peg and closed the peg. Then we released the rubber band and it created energy to go through the hoop. We also used tennis balls and basketballs to make energy. We bounced them together and the tennis ball bounced higher. We put pom-poms into an air gun and when we released it the pom-poms went everywhere. We also put a large bottle of liquid on top of some sticks and when we removed the bottle the sticks moved on their own. It was a very interesting lesson and we really enjoyed it.

Fourth Class Art
As part of our art lesson we took part in an upstyling challenge. We got second hand clothes from a charity shop called Enable Ireland. We worked in groups of 3 and chose an item to upstyle.
We worked together on shoes, t-shirts, jeans, skirts and tops. We used feathers, jewels, glitter and diamonds. We cut some old dark jeans into cool glitter shorts and boring white t-shirts into fun sparkly colourful tops. It was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed the challenge.

Quiet Star Meditation
The children in Holy Trinity have begun a new specialised meditation programme this year. Breda Hicks from Quiet Star Meditation runs this special programme for schools. Breda creates a space outside the classroom where the children feel safe. With lights down and music on they can relax in a safe haven. Breda's style of teaching is soft, encouraging and gentle. She is focussed on helping the children to cope effectively with their emotions and feelings, so that they can handle the challenges they face in their everyday lives.
The children love their meditation time and are enjoying its many benefits, such as, improved concentration and memory, reduced anxiety, impulsiveness, and anger outbursts and improved relationships with others.

     STORM OPHELIA                   October 16th 2017
S.E.S.E. October 2017.
After storm Ophelia, we discovered a tree had fallen on the senior yard. Our class teacher took us out to observe it. We discussed the parts of a tree, what you would find living in a tree, names of different trees, fruits and nuts from trees and things that are made from wood. We measured its roots and they were over 1 metre in length. We collected some leaves for the classroom so that we could investigate which tree it was and do some leaf pressing. With the help of google we discovered it was from the Willow family. Its leaves are linear, thin and beginning to change colour. We learned all about why leaves change colour in Autumn and the importance of them in our environment. We read our work aloud for the rest of the class. We really enjoyed our group work and our project on trees.

The firemen visited our school again this year as part of Active Week. Junior Infants, Senior Infants and 6th Class had great fun spraying water from the large fire hose. They learned about all the equipment that is carried on the fire engine. The firemen wear special uniforms, helmets and masks to protect themselves when they are putting out fires. We are very lucky to have such a great Fire Service in Galway.

There were projects about Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Non- Renewable Energy, Energy Surveys, Recycling, Biodiversity, Global Citizenship and Sustainable Travel.  Junior Infants and Second class performed. Katie from 6th class and a valued member of the Green Schools Committee presented us with the Nationality Survey results. She told us that there are 19 different nationalities in our school. Children come from Poland, Saudi Arabia, Romania, Nigeria, Russia, China, Latvia, Congo, Slovakia, Czech Republic, England, Pakistan, Portugal, Croatia, Togo, South Africa,  Zimbabwe and of course Ireland.
Fiona was very impressed with our day of action and all the children showed their knowledge of the theme and their interest in it. We are looking forward to receiving our 7th Green Flag soon and moving onto the next flag which is Marine Environment as we have a big interest in this area.
                      The Big Travel Challenge
This is the second year running that Holy Trinity took part in the 10 Day Walking Challenge.
An Taisce encourage schools all around Ireland to take part in The Big Challenge to try and increase the amount of children using sustainable TRAVEL. We asked our pupils to walk to school for a 10 day period and we recorded the total amount of walkers taking part each day. On Day 1, 5, & 10 we had special incentives to get a good push on the numbers walking. When the children arrived at school they would get a “Happy Feet” sticker and a “Homework Pas”. We have had many Happy Feet walking to school even though the weather was not very favourable at times. You’d never know we may be in with a chance of winning a nice cash prize for our school.
Keep up the great work walkers!!! A very special Thank You to all the parents who organized the Walking Bus from Ballybane Church @ 8.20 every morning, hail, rain or shine.
